KOLIBRI: WHERE PASSION MEETS PURPOSE

Prototype: Has your journey been easier or harder than you imagined? What have been some of your biggest challenges? 

Alex: This journey has been way more difficult than I thought. I knew it was going to be hard and a lot of work, however; I had no idea how many things I didn't know about creating a fashion line. I am learning and growing throughout this process, it has been amazing to learn the backside of something I already loved - shopping and fashion!

I think the biggest challenges have been working with clothing manufacturers across the country and learning about something new everyday. It takes a lot to build a brand that is successful, but I love being educated on something new everyday and growing my knowledge. My favorite part of this journey has been the beginning and the end. The beginning because committing to something that will grow into something big was one of the most exciting decisions of my life. The end because all of our work and effort for over a year is finally going to be launched!

Prototype: What do you wish someone had told you before you started? Or, like most of us, did someone tell you and you ignored them?

Alex: My mom is an entrepreneur and started her own company around my age. She is the most inspiring and hard-working woman I have ever known and I have always wanted to be just like her. She always told me in order to be successful you need to take strategic risks and be very driven and dedicated.

My mom has my back throughout this process, just like the rest of my family and I am proud to be going on this journey with them. Since they have been supporting me from the start, I feel like there is nothing I wish they would have told me. This is because they already tell me everything I need to be doing to be successful and give great advice. Whenever someone from the outside tells me I can't do something, it makes me want to be successful even more.

Prototype: What strategies have worked for you? Do you have any tips for people just starting out?

Alex: Regarding tips, my biggest one is if I can do it, anyone can. Also, don’t think you’re gonna make any money to start, you’re going to have to work harder than everybody else. Never give up. Passion is the most important thing. Don't be afraid to ask questions, there is never a stupid question!

I think a good strategy that has worked for me is to be creative and come up with new ideas that are different and interesting.

Prototype: What's next for your brand? Any big plans?

Alex: Well, we just had our launch THIS month! Yay! We're all so excited. We launched at the Collective Show in LA. It's a trade show for the swimwear industry.  There was a fabulous fashion show, lots of other great brands and buyers from all over. Such a great place to launch.

After this... Sell, sell, sell! Oh and just wait until you see our new sunscreen coming out soon. It's custom made and we designed our own amazing proprietary scents. 

Prototype: Time for the credits. Is there anyone you'd like to thank, to shout out, that deserves special mention?

Alex: Obviously I would like to thank my family! They are my best friends, the most supportive and kind-hearted people I know, trustworthy and positive. I also especially could not have done this without my mom. Financially, but more importantly as my role-model and support system mentally. She is inspiring and even though I am the face of the brand, her creativity and intelligence throughout this process has been amazing. Her experience as a business owner is invaluable and I am so proud to be her daughter. Also, our Bali team (Skye, Richard, Rimma, and everyone else) has been our rock and helped us throughout this process with their guidance and experience as well. I appreciate you guys so much and all the help you have given us!
